the battle continues for zerg, terran, and protoss clans as activision blizzard announces the release date of the starcraft saga - starcraft II: wings of liberty.
the development the development of starcraft II began in 2003, just as after warcraft III: the frozen throne was released, but was delayed for the temporary reassignment of blizzard's resources to world of warcraft. development for the game was put on hold for a year in 2005 due to the assistance needed for world of warcraft. the official game development of starcraft II was announced on may of 2007 in seoul, south korea during a blizzard worldwide invitational.
the company activision blizzard, inc. is the merge between vivendi games and activision, inc. the merge was announced in december 2007 and was just later permitted to take place in april 2008 making sure that there weren't any antitrust issues. vivendi games is the holdings company for sierra entertainment and blizzard entertainment. it owned the rights to such popular franchises as warcraft, starcraft, diablo and world of warcraft (all games developed by blizzard entertainment) as well as others like empire earth, leisure suit larry, ground control and tribes and crash bandicoot and spyro the dragon owned by sierra entertainment. activision, inc. was the first independent developer and distributor of video games for gaming consoles. its first products were cartridges for the atari 2600 video console system. activision is now one of the largest third party video game publishers in the world. believing it would be "the world’s largest and most profitable pure-play video game publisher", the two companies merged and closed the deal in july 2008.
the release blizzard entertainment founder mike morhaime stated in one of his interviews that the targeted release of starcraft II will be by the end of this year (2009). however, at present, activision blizzard, inc., its parent company, confirmed that the release date for the most awaited game is moved to the first half of next year (2010). i've played starcraft since i was 14 and got addicted with the real-time strategy video game. i can't wait for the three powerful races: zerg, terran, and protoss to clash once again. here's the starcraft II teaser trailer released by blizzard entertainment:
